Helen Smith really shows off her writing chops on “The Memory Man”, packing a surprisingly complex plot into a short story. The bits and pieces of fragmented memories requires you to really pay attention as you try to figure out what comes next. Best of all was the vivid prose that painted pictures in my mind as I read along. Something as mundane as light cast from a flashlight becomes an animal of a different sort, somehow dark and foreboding. As with the characters, so too is the reader cast in the role of detective, trying to determine where they are, what has happened, even who the others might be. Intriguing and compelling, well worth the read!
